Consequences of Reckless Driving

Almost already two weeks ago when a sad news reached our knowledge –  my sister’s mother-in-law got into an accident. She was crossing the street when a motorcycle suddenly appeared and hit her badly. The impact was a bit strong that she thrown away on the other side of the road. She underwent brain surgery because there were blood clots in her brain. Sadly, until now, my sister’s mother-in-law who is already 71 years old is still unconscious and comatose and only time will tell whether she’ll survive or not.

And what happened to the driver? It was found out from the cctv that the driver, who is only in his 20’s, was over speeding and overtaking a car in front of him and he didn’t noticed that there’s a person crossing the road. No doubt the accident was his fault. But the family of my sister’s mother-in-law decided not to file a case against the driver because of their personal reasons. Instead, they’ll just charge the driver all the medical expenses which already runs to almost 2 million pesos up to date.

I am sharing this situation because I am personally closed to my sister’s mother-in-law. She really is a kind-hearted person and she’s like a second mother to me. From that accident, a lot of things got back from my memories. I feel guilty for some reasons eventhough I have nothing to do with that accident.

Maybe because I am a motorcycle driver myself. It’s the easiest way for me in getting to work and run some errands. Though I only drive a motorcycle scooter, I’ve already been to far distances and drive into major main roads. I drive not too fast but I admit sometimes when in hurry, I exceeded the limit and oversped. I also experienced overtaking any kind of vehicles because I thought I have an advantage of doing it due to the small size of my motorcycle, and I know it’s very wrong at all. I also experienced violating traffic rules to which my driver’s license got suspended. I also got into minor accidents for the past 20 years of driving, most were not my fault and some almost landed me to the hospital and left some deep scars on my body.

And to all of that experiences, I already learned my lessons. From then on, I became more careful in driving, abide traffic rules and pay more attention to the pedestrians. I don’t want to be the cause of accidents and most of all, I don’t want to be the reason for other’s hospitalization or death. Being an irresponsible and reckless driver, whether a motorcycle or any kind of vehicles will always result in a very bad scenarios. And the most painful part is that most of the time, the victims of road accidents are innocent people. Just like what happened to my sister’s mother-in-law.
